My God….
A Real Super hero…..this idea fascinated me from my childhood. I always like this Hanuman persona as a god super hero from my school fancy dress competition to my village Ram leela.I took a hanuman mask from fair and put on my face, running around the whole area where I live and acting like Hanuman. I always wanted to became as Bajarang Bali as god real hero in my mind. But when I migrated from village to urban metro city, my  super hero’s also changes day by day. They will talk and play with me from Toy’s, Video games, Sticker, Cartoons film,Tishirts and from my english school dramas. So many thinks can related about a superhero’s in urban metro cities life. Spiderman,Iron,Superman,Hulk,Batman…etc. so many superhero’s coming in this new Contemporary age. How this superhero’s follow the ideology and inspiration from Hanuman, the persona of Hanuman is always over shadow to all superhero’s. Because of that Hanuman is a real god to all superhero’s..
 I believes that the true essence of strength is Hanuman. Through my new works, I conjoins the elements of memory, culture, links between rural, urban and global, migration, religion and belief systems all together with an effective glue of strength. The symphony of west-east and related with our current senario. I feel  my works strongly recommend new ideas and new vision.
But still I knew that superhero’s and my real hero is God Hanuman…!!!

                Rethinking the  Regional

 A sweeping view of modern Indian art of the post independence period reveals that most leading names in the field of art hail from small, nondescript places and have had modest beginnings. Nonetheless, their roots have played a vital role in shaping the art practices of many. Eminent  artist Syed Haider Raza cherishes vivid memories of his childhood spent in the jungles of Babaria in Madhya Pradesh which sharpened his sensibilities of color, light and darkness. Raza’s first landscapes before his shifting to Mumbai were painted under the guidance of Bapurao Athavale at Nagpur School of Art, the latter being an alumnus of Sir. J.J. School of Art, Mumbai. While Raza’s career and his oeuvre is well mapped, there are others such as his extremely talented friend and contemporary, artist Bhaiyyaji Goswami from  a tiny hamlet near Nagpur who have sunk into oblivion.  There are artists who successfully gravitated to high profile careers miles away from their hometowns, while many others, despite potential, could not break away at the right time and place to rise higher, or had no particular inclination to test unchartered ways.
The expansive state of Maharashtra comprises distinct territories such as Konkan, Western Maharashtra, Marathwada, Khandesh, and Vidarbha, each of which possess a unique socio- political and cultural flavor. How intensely do provincial features such as locale, economy, social structure, culture manifest in works of artists tucked away in relatively faceless towns? When most artists migrate to urban spaces  what  are the kind of influences from their rural or semi rural backgrounds that they carry as baggage ? How do they negotiate with their new environment?
‘Rethinking the  Regional ‘ is envisaged at several levels. It is aimed to cover a wide and ambitious spectrum of the art scene from the 1940’s and 50’s till the present times. identifying regions, artists and works of art from the 40’s to the present day.Most exhibitions and curatorial practices are metro centric. The ‘regional’, which goes under the blanket term ‘peripheral’ is mostly neglected and dismissed.  Different trends in the region going back to pre independence to have not been adequately represented. There is a general lack of understanding of the evolution of different styles and movements and their present state in different centers like Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nasik and Nagpur.
Maharashtra has over 200 art schools run by the government and numerous private educational trusts, some of them have been around for about  fifty years. Students from these art schools are seeking to come to terms with their tradition and their modernity. It would be relevant to cover the pedagogical practices of these institutions and their role in shaping the ‘regional’.

A substantial body of writing on Art and Aesthetics has been produced in the state in the last five to six decades, one of the earliest being’ Bharatiya Chitrakala’ by Balkrishna Dabhade of Pune. Like Modern Review and Prabasi in 20th century Bengal, Marathi magazines such as Mauj and Satyakatha have carried regular features on artists, in addition to printing art works. There are also lesser known publications in the regional language such as Yugawani from Nagpur and Anwayartha from Sangli.

Taking into consideration the works of artists who have migrated to other the metropolises and as the also the ones who remained and worked  from their home bases would yield an interesting tapestry of myriad hues- varying concerns, content and formal language.

Shlok intends to step in at this point. Envisaged by Sheetal Rishi Darda six years ago with the aim to provide a platform to promising artists from faraway towns and smaller cities in Maharashtra who needed to be more visible but had limited means of getting access to art. Shlok in collaboration with NGMA Mumbai  has  envisaged  ‘Rethinking the Regional’,  with Dr. Manisha Patil as the Curator and Mrs. Sheetal Darda as Project Director.

 It would be our endeavor to comb the entire state to bring together the works of those artists who have contributed significantly to mainstream Indian art as well as several others who have been relegated to a state of anonymity but nonetheless deserve a mention. With the aim of making it more rounded and multi disciplinary the show would not only comprise of artists’ exhibits but also focus on relevant histories such as the contribution of the art schools, regional/ vernacular art writing et al. A bi-lingual seminar aimed at facilitating a dialogue and giving voice to artists and art writers from different regions is also proposed.
